First-Gen College Student? I Can Relate

It's tough being the first one college student in your family. It might not seem like a big deal, but there's a lot that comes along with the package. It's a fantastic feeling, having the opportunity to further your education. You are given the chance of a lifetime that not even our parents or other relatives were given. I know when Freshman year rolled around it was like a celebration in my household. The smiles on the faces of my parents are something I'll never forget.

Yet, a lot is riding on the backs of first-generation college students. Don't feel alone because there are thousands of people, including me, that are right there with you. The sense of obligation is one thing that gets to everyone. We feel pressured to work our hardest for that 4.0 GPA. This is where some of us tend to lose ourselves. We push until there's nothing else left to give. Talk to someone doesn't matter whether its a friend, relative, counselor, etc. There is always someone who is willing to listen, it's us who tend to turn away from it. It's not as easy as it sounds, we all cope differently, all have a completely different background and setting. When things start getting tough take a minute to stop, breathe and regroup. Know you're going to college to better YOURSELF.
